our son, Adamu Abubakar, has been crowned the Sardauna Ganye II, a title previously held by his father, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, before his elevation to Wazirin Adamawa. How do feel about this succession?
As Adamu’s mother, I feel elated at his crowning as Sardauna Ganye II. You know the tradition is that until an holder of the title in a family dies, you can give the title to his any other person in his generation. But the father deemed it fit, because he was elevated in Yola, as the Wazirin Adamawa, to relinquish the title, which was now conferred on his on his son by the Gangwari Ganye, HRH Dr Umaru Adamu Sands.
It underscores the need to bring the younger generation closer home to their community for them to understand the traditions and customs of their people. The father deemed it fit and good for him not just to have Western education but to also know our customs. And Gangwari also found him (Adamu) worthy to be conferred with the title as the second Sardauna of Ganye, after his father.
Being the Sardauna of Ganye, Adamu, who is the Commissioner for Works and Energy in Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s administration, has now become an ambassador to the people of the community. As a commissioner in Yola, he’s doing very well and now he has been given another responsibility.
What is the significance of his coronation?
It is to make him a responsible member of society, because today’s society is so decayed. (The significance is) that he should be a responsible man; he should know the pains of the people and carry the people along. We all come from villages, if you don’t go home, you have missed it all and people would not know you. And we don’t want the family’s name to go into extinction, so you have to start teaching your children these traditional things, so I feel very elated and very humbled. When I arrived (at the coronation) I went to thank the Gangwari, Dr Umaru Adamu Sands, for the honour done to my son and he was very happy.
